Before qualifying as a Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeon dr. van Deventer taught Anatomy to pre- and postgraduate Medical Students at the Universities of Stellenbosch and the Orange Free State. He also obtained a Master’s degree in Anatomy and his knowledge of this subject had the advantage of enabling him to develop new reconstructive and aesthetic surgical techniques based on sound anatomical principles.
Once qualified as a Plastic Surgeon he was awarded the Mushed Education Traveling Scholarship taking him to the U S A and U K to further his studies in Aesthetic Plastic Surgery.
On returning to South Africa he opened private practices in Bellville and Hermanus but remained affiliated to the Anatomy and Plastic Surgery Departments of the University of Stellenbosch. This allowed him to do research on the blood supply of the breast for which he was awarded the Davis and Geck research prize as well as the consultant winner - best publication in 2016 by the Association of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons of South Africa (APRASSA) for his publication appearing in a leading international journal “Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery” (PRS). His knowledge of Anatomy had the advantage of enabling him to develop new reconstructive and aesthetic surgical techniques for which he was awarded prize by APRASSA in 2011.
In 2012 he was awarded the prize by APRASSA for developing the technique of internal breast support, giving excellent and long term results with breast lift and breast reduction procedures.
Previously he was invited guest speaker to the meeting of the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery held in Australia in 2008. In 2009 he was invited to lecture at the Anglia Ruskin University in Chelmsford, United Kingdom on the newer aspects on the blood supply of the breasts and its clinical application.
In 2009 he also received the prize for the best poster presentation by the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons and was the invited guest speaker to the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery held in London in 2010.
In 2014 he was invited as a guest speaker at the 12th Quadrennial Meeting of the European Society of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery.
The American Society of Plastic Surgeons and the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery’s mouthpiece, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery journal, bestowed on him the honour of rewarding him with the prize for the best special topic publication for the calendar year 2016. This journal is the most highly cited, well respected and top peer reviewed journal on plastic surgery in the world and the award seen a momentous accomplishment.
